What is a
netlet?
To get the full picture you should visit the iPlanet, website.
It is a signed Java Applet that runs on the client (i.e., Browser JVM)
It listens on 127.0.0.0 (localhost) on any number of ports (configured via HTTP on the server)
Any connections to those ports are proxied over the https connection to another (optional) proxy on the Portal server
The server proxy connects to <realhost> at another port (can be the same).
With the optional server side proxy in place there's no need for any additional holes to be made through the inside firewall from the DMZ.
The Portal filters connections down the level of an individual URL so this is the ultimate in access control
[pictures to come here showing the DMZ configuration and all the components]
Conclusion
If all your legacy client/server applications talk TCP/IP then this is by far and away the simplest way to host them securely on the Internet. Needless to say, ApogeeCT would be only to happy to assist your organization in implementing this solution, which, of course, also brings all the other benefits of a Portal.
